Magnitude-5.8 quake off Hinatuan Surigao del Sur

A magnitude-5.8 quake struck off Hinatuan in Surigao del Sur on Friday afternoon, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.

In its earthquake information, the PHIVOLCS said the quake struck 34 kilometers northeast of Hinatuan at about 2:06 p.m. 

The quake, tectonic in origin, had a depth of focus of about 45 kilometers.

PHIVOLCS said aftershocks, and damage are expected from the temblor with recorded instrumental intensities as follows:

  • Intensity III - Bislig City, Surigao del Sur
  • Intensity II - Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental
  • Intensity I - Surigao City, Cagayan de Oro City, Kidapawan City; Tupi South Cotabato; Malungon and Alabel, Sarangani

On July 26, a magnitude-5.6 quake struck off the town of Manay in Davao Oriental, but PHIVOLCS expected no damage from the quake. —LBG, GMA News
