Bulacan residents evacuate aboard old refrigerators amid flooding

Residents of Barangay Turo in Bocaue, Bulacan on Thursday used an old refrigerator to evacuate from their homes amid the neck-deep floodwaters brought by typhoon Ulysses.

According to Ivan Mayrina’s report on “24 Oras,” a rope was tied from the houses so the residents inside the refrigerators will have something to hold on to.

Arturo Montero, who had stayed in the area for two decades, said it was his first time to experience this level of calamity.

“Kung ikukumpara mo sa Ondoy mas malala po ito. Kasi may kasamang hanging malakas eh,” Montero said.

Heavy rains and strong winds prevailed over many parts of Luzon overnight, including Bocaue, that caused flooding.

In Bocaue, amid the onslaught of the typhoon, only one lane was passable because a toppled electricity post was on fire that was quickly put out by authorities.

Aside from clearing the roads, NLEX management also prioritized making the Bocaue Toll Plaza passable. The last time that the North Luzon Expressway was last flooded to the point that it was unpassable was during the onslaught of Ondoy in 2009.

A video taken by Alvin Diemsen showed a portion of the Bocaue Crossing was flooded. Even some portions of the MacArthur Highway in several parts of Bocaue seemed like a river. -- Joahnna Lei Casilao/BAP, GMA News
