5 hurt in 6.1-magnitude Davao del Sur quake —NDRRMC

At least five people were reported hurt after a 6.1-magnitude earthquake hit Davao del Sur on Sunday, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Monday.

The NDDRMC said the five persons hurt are from Cotabato province.

At least eight landslide incidents were also reported in the province including seven in Makilala and one in M'lang, according to the NDRRMC.

In M'lang, the portion of the mountain estimated to be at least seven feet high collapsed. No one was injured in the incident, the local government said.

In Davao City, 45 people have evacuated from their homes to UP Mindanao Faculty and Staff Housing- Temporary Treatment and Monitoring Facility.

At least 21 houses were reported damaged in M’lang and Kabacan in Cotabato, including two that were totally damaged.

M'lang Mayor Russel Abonado called elders of the Manobo tribe to lead at least 50 families to the nearby covered court at least two kilometers away from Sitio B'yao in Barangay New Esperanza. The order came after at least 16 houses of the Manobos in the barangay were damaged due to the quake. 

Chapels in Barangay Baguntapay and New Lawaan in M'lang were also damaged. In New Lawaan, at least three houses made of concrete and light materials were totally damaged, the local government said.

Three houses in Bansalan, Davao del Sur, were reported damaged, including one that was totally damaged.

In Soccsksargen region, five infrastructures were also damaged: two churches in M’lang, Cotabato; a hospital in Isulan, Sultan Kudarat; two private establishments in Kabacan, Cotabato.

In Bansalan and Davao City, three infrastructures were reported damaged, including a university gym, a temporary treatment and monitoring facilities, and a barangay hall.

Several problems in power supply were experienced at the Davao Light and Power Corporation and Davao del Sur.

Some hospitals such as the Kidapawan Medical Specialist, Madonna Medical Center, and Kidapawan Doctors Hospital Inc. evacuated their patients to designated evacuation sites.

After assessing the structures of the hospitals, the patients and staff immediately returned to the buildings, according to NDDRMC.

The city government of Kidapawan and Department of Education Cotabato School Division suspended work on Monday for the structural assessment of their building.

The magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck Magsaysay, Davao del Sur on Sunday.

PHIVOLCS said Intensity V was felt in Kidapawan City, Arakan, Carmen, Kabacan, Makilala and M'Lang, North Cotabato; City of Koronadal and Banga, South Cotabato; Matalam, Cotabato; Bansalan, Hagonoy, Magsaysay and Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur.

Intensity IV meanwhile was felt in Davao City; Banisilan and Midsayap, North Cotabato; Don Carlos, Bukidnon; Polomok, Sto. Nino and Norala, South Cotabato South Cotabato; Alabel, Kiamba and Malapatan, Saranggani; Palimbang and Tacurong, Sultan Kudarat.

Intensity III was experienced in Cotabato City; Cagayan De Oro City; Kadingilan and Kitaotao, Bukidnon; Tagum City, Davao del Norte; Maco and Nabunturan, Davao de Oro.

Intensity II was felt in Cagayan de Oro City; and Kalilangan, Bukidnon.
