Sulu police chief shot dead at quarantine control point in Jolo

The chief of the Sulu Provincial Police Office was shot dead in a quarantine control point in Jolo, Sulu on Friday afternoon.

A police report from the Police Regional Office - Bangsamoro Autonomous Region identified the victim as Police Colonel Michael Bawayan Jr.

Initial investigation indicated that Bawayan was inspecting a quarantine control point in Barangay Asturias when the suspect, Police Senior Staff Sergeant Imran Jilah, shot him.

Bawayan's security detail shot Jilah to protect the provincial director. Jilah was himself killed.

The motive of the crime is still being determined, police said.

Bawayan was rushed to a hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

He was among the police officers who had faced charges due to the Jolo misencounter last year that killed four Army intelligence officers. —NB, GMA News
