2 soldiers killed in clash with NPA in Negros Occidental
Two soldiers were killed while four others sustained injuries after they foiled an alleged attempt by the New People's Army (NPA) to attack and extort money from a community in Negros Occidental on Wednesday.
According to the Philippine Army's 3rd Infantry (Spearhead) Division on Thursday, the troops encountered around 25 NPA members during combat operations, which came following a tip from a civilian about the rebels’ presence in Sitio Tiyos, Barangay Quintin Remo in Moises Padilla town.
"Said group was planning to stage attacks and intensify their extortion scheme in the area," the military said.
“The firefight ensued for about one hour as the enemy continued to retaliate while covering for their other members to withdraw. The enemy suffered major losses as they were seen by engaged soldiers dragging away their at least four comrades,” it said.
The military said the troops also encountered "more or less seven withdrawing NPA terrorist members" at around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
"The enemy withdrew towards the east direction," it said.
The wounded soldiers are now in stable condition, it added.
The military recovered from the encounter site three backpacks, two cellphones, ammunition, four large cooking pots, various belongings, and supplies.
Prior to the clash, the military had also received reports that the rebels were planning to attack the Hilaitan-Trinidad farm-to-market road in Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental.
The project is already 90% complete and is constantly being secured by the government forces.
“As I direct our troops to conduct relentless military operations against these terrorists, I encourage all Negrenses to join our fight against this terrorist group by continue providing information about their plans and activities and further preventing them from casting more terror," said division commander Major General Benedict Arevalo. — VBL, GMA News
