Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma has issued a circular letter on Misa de Gallo or Simbang Gabi guidelines and reminders requiring, among others, the implementation of health protocols amid the COVID-19 pandemic and the threat of the Omicron variant.

"We continue enforcing our usual liturgical health protocols, especially the wearing of face masks, conducting thermal scanning and observing physical distancing," said Palma.

"We also conform with the fifty percent (50%) capacity of our churches as allowed by the Inter-Agency Task Force. These guidelines are applicable only during these pandemic times. Also, the livestreaming of these Masses, as already practiced, is highly encouraged," he added.

The prelate added that venue for the celebration of the nine-day votive masses will be conducted in close coordination with the local government units.

"Generally, Misas de Gallo are to be celebrated in parish churches. In order

to decongest our parishes, said Masses can be celebrated in well-ventilated spacious barangay chapels, in covered courts or barangay gymnasia but with the expressed permission given by your respective Local Government Units, at least from the barangay level," he explained.

In Cebu City, the celebration of the mass in other venues should be approved by the Cebu City Emergency Operations Center.

During the Christmas Eve Mass, "The traditional kissing of the image of the Baby Jesus is still disallowed, however, the faithful may just make a profound bow before said image. Physical distancing within the lines is also to be maintained when this is being done."

The other reminders pertain to the vestments of priests, readings and other activities.

In closing, the Archbishop voiced hope that "Since these Misas de Gallo or Aguinaldo Masses are celebrated for the perseverance of our faith, especially during these trying times, may we still be able to celebrate Christmas meaningfully and solemnly, although perhaps not with the same pomp and splendor as in the past years." -- BAP, GMA News
