Earthquakes hit Batangas, Occidental Mindoro —PHIVOLCS


Earthquakes were recorded in Batangas and Occidental Mindoro on Monday afternoon, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.

In its earthquake bulletin, PHIVOLCS said magnitude 5.3 earthquake, which is tectonic in origin, was recorded 24 kilometers southwest of Calatagan, Batangas at 5:12 p.m.

It also said Intensity III was felt in Quezon City while Intensity II was felt in San Felipe, Zambales.

The quake also had a depth of focus of 99 kilometers.

In another earthquake bulletin, PHIVOLCS said a magnitude 5.5 earthquake shook 23 kilometers northeast of Paluan, Occidental Mindoro at 5:12 p.m.

It is also tectonic in origin and has a depth of focus of 104 kilometers.

Intensity IV was felt in Calatagan, Batangas and Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro while Intensity III was felt in Batangas City, Lemery, Malvar, and Bauan, Batangas; Tagaytay City and Amadeo, Cavite; Quezon City; City of Manila; and Pasay City.

Intensity II was also felt  in Taguig City; Mandaluyong City; Makati City; Caloocan City; Malabon City; Tanay, Rizal; and San Felipe, Zambales.

Aftershocks will be expected in the earthquakes, PHIVOLCS said.

PHIVOLCS chief Renato Solidum said no tsunami nor damage are expected from the quake.

"Hindi naman ito magiging mapanira, masyadong malalim. Pangalawa, wala namang tsunami na ma-generate ito kasi malalim (It will not be damaging because it is deep. It will not generate a tsunami because it is deep)," said Solidum over Super Radyo dzBB.—AOL, GMA News
