Apprentice coast guard shot dead in Pangasinan, says PCG

A 23-year-old Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) seaman was killed by an unidentified gunman in Sual, Pangasinan on Tuesday.

In a statement, the PCG identified the victim as CG Apprentice Seaman (ASN) Angelo Martinez of the PCG District Southern Tagalog.

Based on an initial report by the Philippine National Police (PNP), PCG spokesperson CG Commodore Armando Balilo said that the shooting incident happened in Barangay Paitan, West Corner Bolaoen Road in Sual town at around 11:45 p.m. on January 11, 2022.

Martinez, who was a resident of Barangay Bolaoen, was reportedly having a conversation with the suspect before he was shot in the mouth.

A concerned citizen found the victim’s body lying beside his motorcycle, and reported the incident to the nearest police station.

Martinez was then rushed to the Primary Care Infirmary Facility in Caoayan, Sual Pangasinan and was pronounced “dead on arrival” by the attending physician Dr. Mariel Fernando.

PCG noted that the person who relayed the incident to the police initially thought the victim was involved in a vehicular accident.

However, the Sual Rescue Team found two cartridges of caliber 9mm beside the victim's  body.

Aside from the cartridge cases, the Scene of the Crime Operatives team from Lingayen, Pangasinan recovered one cellphone, one cigarette butt, and one red motorcycle from the crime scene.

PCG District Southern Tagalog Commander CG Commodore Genito Basilio extended condolences to the bereaved family of Martinez whom he remembered as “a trustworthy staff and a son who set aside his personal plan to fulfill his dreams and aspirations for his parents.”

“He will not be able to achieve his dreams and aspirations anymore...,” Basilio said.

“Rest in peace, CG ASN Angelo Martinez. My snappy salute to you. Salamat sa serbisyo mo sa bayan, anak,” he added.

The PCG said it is conducting an investigation into the murder of Martinez, while the PNP continues its hot pursuit operation on the suspect. —LBG, GMA News
