Landslides reported in Baguio City amid weekend's heavy rain

Several landslides and soil erosion incidents were reported in Baguio City over the weekend amid heavy rains brought by inclement weather.

According to Claire Lacanilao’s report on “24 Oras Weekend,” about four families in Barangay Pacdal were evacuated after a heavy downpour triggered a landslide at around 8 p.m. on Saturday.

“Pinagdadasal namin na walang nadaganan na sasakyan o mga taong dumadaan. Kasi natatakot din kami para sa mga dumadaan,” Deo Rillera, a resident, said.

(We pray that no passing cars or people were crushed. Because we are also afraid for the people that pass by the area.)

The City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (CDRRMC) conducted a geo-tagging assessment to prevent any further incidents. Equipment for clearing operations was also readied.

The CDRRMC said at least six soil erosion incidents were recorded in the city.

“Knowing sa Baguio City ay may mga kahoy, ingat tayo at kung kailangan lumikas muna handa ang kapulisan at pwedeng gamitin ang mobile natin,” Baguio City Police Office public information officer Lieutenant Angeline Dongpaen said.

Meanwhile, some roads and tourist attractions in the city experienced zero visibility since Saturday due to the heavy rainfall.

Mariveles, Bataan

Heavy rain caused flooding in Mariveles, Bataan's Barangay Ipag.

According to Ian Cruz's report, residents had to use a rope as floodwaters were chest deep.

“Kanina binaha nanaman kami. Ngayon baha na naman po. Dalawang beses po, kalilinis lang, tapos maglilinis nanaman,” a resident said.

(A while ago we experienced flooding. Now, there are floodwaters again. We need to clean again.)

Floodwaters subsided early Sunday morning. However, residents are now cleaning as floodwaters left a thick layer of mud.

Meanwhile, severe rains also caused a tree to topple onto a house in Sitio Kutad.

Seven members of the Pahanustan family were inside the house when the incident happened.

Grade Four student John Lex was injured after a wall collapsed.

On the other hand, Gemma said her two-year-old son was hit on the head by part of the falling roof.

Dominga asked for financial help from the public.

“Maawa kayo sa amin. Sana matulungan kami. Mahirap lang po kami,” she said.

(Have pity on us. I hope you can help us. We are poor.)

The GMA Kapuso Foundation provided the family with relief goods.

The Mariveles Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council went to Sitio Kutad to check and assess the needs of the family.

“Kukunin natin ang mga information at ipapadala namin sa mayor’s office ang mga impormasyon para makapagpadala po sila ng assistance,” said Alvin Binondo of Mariveles MDRRMO.

Floodwaters in nine barangays in the town have subsided, the MDRRMO added. Mel Matthew Doctor/DVM, GMA News
