Mactan Cebu International Airport runway open for limited time

The Mactan Cebu International Airport runway has been opened again but only during the daytime, according to the report of Mao dela Cruz on Super Radyo DZBB.

The runway will be open from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. for 14 days.

There will be no night operations until the runway has been cleared and lights repaired or replaced.

Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) Assistant General Manager Atty. Glenn Napuli said that flights coming in and leaving the airport has resumed Tuesday morning.

The announcement was made even if the Korean Air airplane, which overshot the runway on Sunday evening, has not yet been removed from the accident site.

A Korean Air plane overshot a runway in Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) on Sunday evening due to bad weather, but no casualties were reported.

“The incident has necessitated the temporary closure of the MCIA runway to allow for the safe removal of the aircraft. For now, all international and domestic flights to and from MCIA are canceled until further notice,” MCIA said.

Some flights in Mactan-Cebu airport were also diverted.

Dela Cruz reported that authorities have yet to clear the site and replace the damaged lights along the runway due to heavy rains, mud, and safety protocols.

It may take a couple of days to remove the airplane from the site and one week to repair the runway lights.

The timeline given by Napuli is tentative as they have to check the condition of the runway after the plane has been removed.

A Korean team is arriving at 7:30 a.m. to help in the clearing operations. -- BAP, GMA News
