One dead after bus carrying teachers falls into ravine in Bataan

A service bus carrying a group of public school teachers in Quezon City fell off a cliff in Orani, Bataan on Saturday.

One teacher died after getting pinned to a tree branch, according to Jaime Santos’ report on “24 Oras Weekend.” More than 20 people were injured following the accident in Barangay Tala in Orani.

In a statement, the Schools Division Office of Quezon City said the teachers were part of a contingent that attended a gender and development activity at a resort in Orani.

“At about 11:30 a.m. on November 5, 2022, the fateful DepEd QC bus (SAA-9845) carrying 48 passengers, including the driver and alternate, about 15 minutes after departure from the resort, while negotiating a very sharp curve, lost its brakes and plunged into a 15-meter ravine, causing various injuries to the passengers," it said.

"One of the participants, a teacher of Payatas B Elementary School, was declared dead on arrival at the Orani District Hospital due to a fatal injury. The officials of the SDO Quezon City rushed to the site to give assistance," it added.

The injured victims were rushed by early responders from the Province of Bataan to the Orani District Hospital where they were given first aid and subjected to an X-ray and CT scan, while three victims were taken to the Balanga Provincial Hospital for treatment.

Eighteen injured participants were given psychological first aid and stress debriefing.

Meanwhile, the Quezon City government confirmed the bus was one of three it donated to the Schools Division Office in 2016.

The local government said it was “deeply saddened” by the accident and that it was willing to extend assistance to the victims.
