(According to one of our witnesses...their jeep got bogged down in the last river they were crossing near their barangay. The problem is they got stuck so they asked to be pulled by another jeep. However, there was a sudden flash flood, so the jeep tumbled over which became the reason for the passengers being swept away or getting injuries.)
He also said all victims were accounted for.
“As of now po, nandoon pa rin sa covered court ng Barangay Sta. Ines, Tanay, Rizal ‘yung mga na-recover na bangkay,” Matienzo added.
(As of now, the cadavers are still there in the covered court of Barangay Sta. Ines Tanay, Rizal.)
He said that before the accident, the elderly victims went to the town to get financial assistance from the Department of Social Welfare and Development.
“Ang sabi raw po kumuha o nag-withdraw [sa] ATM dahil parang may ayuda raw po from DSWD," Matienzo said in a “24 Oras Weekend” report.
"Sila po as senior citizens pumila sila sa Landbank. But then ginabi na po, supposed to be at 3 p.m. dapat nakaangat na raw po ang biyahe pabalik na po ng Barangay Sta. Ines. Pero inantay pa raw po ang senior citizens para makapag-withdraw and then by 6 p.m. saka pa lang sila nakaalis ng bayan pabalik ng barangay nila.”
(Some said that they will get or withdraw at an ATM because there seems to be financial assistance from the DSWD. As senior citizens, they lined up at the Landbank. Supposed to be their trip going back to Barangay Sta. Ines was at 3 p.m. but the senior citizens were still waiting to withdraw. It was only at 6 p.m. when they headed back to their barangay.)
According to the local government of Tanay, barangay captains usually regulate trips for their respective residents.
The LGU also notifies them, particularly when heavy rains are being experienced in the province. It also advised residents to avoid crossing the river at night, the report added.
Meanwhile, the LGU said it would help the families of those who lost their lives in the accident. —KG, GMA Integrated News
