Soldier kills 4 colleagues inside Camp Evangelista

A soldier on Saturday attacked and opened fire on his fellow servicemen who were asleep in Camp Evangelista in Cagayan de Oro.

Five soldiers were killed in the incident, including the suspect, and one soldier was injured, according to Carlo Mateo's report on Super Radyo dzBB.

Based on the initial investigation of the Philippine Army 4th Infantry Division (4ID), the four victims were sleeping in their room in the Service Center Battalion Headquarters when the soldier shot them with an M16 rifle.

Other soldiers were alarmed and responded to the shooting.

"Two (2) soldiers wrestled and managed to neutralize the suspect acting in self-defense and defense to other person which caused the suspect's death," 4ID spokesperson Major Francisco Garello Jr., said in a statement.

Meanwhile, a wounded soldier was immediately brought to the hospital.

"We vow close coordination with the PNP as we also conduct an internal probe that will look into all angles that triggered the incident," said Garello, noting that the 4ID was also in the process of informing the families of the personnel who died during the incident as well as the family of the wounded soldier.

Garello assured the public that shooting was an isolated incident that would not impact the operations of the Army unit.

"Hence, 4ID created a Board of Inquiry (BOI) Team to closely collaborate with the PNP COCPO and SOCO in order to expedite the investigation and put closure to this unfortunate incident," he added. — DVM, GMA Integrated News
