PNP: 2 barangay captains killed in separate gun attacks in Cebu, Maguindanao

Two barangay chairpersons were killed following separate gun attacks in the provinces of Cebu and Maguindanao del Sur early this week, the Philippine National Police said Thursday.

“We recorded two incidents particularly diyan sa Cebu where the victims were identified as a barangay captain and his wife. Another case in Maguindanao. Both transpired March 14,” PNP spokesperson Police Colonel Jean Fajardo said at a press briefing.

In Cebu, Fajardo said the police already identified some persons of interest and are looking into personal grudge as the possible motive in the killing.

In the Maguindanao incident, Fajardo said the police are now reviewing CCTV footage that may help in the investigation.

Fajardo shared the reports when asked if there is already a surge of killings or violence against barangay officials with the upcoming barangay elections.

According to her, the two cases are not yet considered as election-related incidents because the poll period has not started yet.

She said PNP chief Police General Rodolfo Azurin Jr. ordered police commanders to intensify efforts against gun-for-hire activities to prevent such crimes.

According to Fajardo, some elected officials have requested additional security details, which are being studied by the authorities. — Joviland Rita/RSJ, GMA Integrated News
