PHIVOLCS lifts tsunami warning

A few hours after a 6.2-magnitude earthquake that hit the coastal town of Gigmoto in Catanduanes late Tuesday evening, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) lifted its Tsunami Advisory.

The agency issued the advisory that a "minor sea level disturbance" is expected to the coastal communities of the provinces of Catanduanes, Northern Samar, and Eastern Samar.

The residents were advised to stay away from the beach and coastal areas.

In its advisory issued at 12:30 a.m., the PHIVOLCS provided an update on its findings.

There were no significant sea level disturbances recorded by PHIVOLCS in at monitoring stations facing the epicentral area since the earthquake occurred at 8:54 p.m.

"With this, any effects due to minor sea level disturbances have largely passed and therefore DOST-PHIVOLCS has now cancelled the recommendations issued for this event," the agency said. -- BAP, GMA Integrated News
