PCG rescues 16 fishermen in Oriental Mindoro

Sixteen fishermen en route to Iloilo province were rescued by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) after their motorbanca encountered engine trouble in the waters off Oriental Mindoro.

According to the PCG on Thursday, the fishermen departed Rosario, Cavite, on Saturday, April 22, to go on a fishing venture in Estancia, Iloilo.

Their vessel, however, encountered engine problems while traversing the waters off Baco Chico Island, Calapan, on Sunday, April 23.

Search and rescue personnel of the PCG sighted the fishermen approximately 10 nautical miles from Pola town after their skipper called for assistance.

The Oriental Mindoro oil spill response team also assisted in the rescue operations.

The PCG medical team and the Pola municipal disaster risk reduction and management office provided medical assistance to the rescued individuals while their motorbanca was towed into the coastal municipality.

"[T]hey remain in Pola while fixing their boat's engine so they can proceed to Estancia, Iloilo," the PCG said in a Facebook post. —Sundy Locus/VBL, GMA Integrated News
