Car enthusiast in Bataan builds improvised electric car

A car enthusiast from Mariveles, Bataan successfully transformed a gasoline-power car into an electric car!

According to Kuya Kim’s report on “24 Oras,” Tuesday, Albert Nario does not have to worry about the rising fuel cost with his car.

“Junk na siya. Binili namin para pang piyesa nung isang car,” Albert said.

To make the most of it, Albert started doing some improvisations.

“Nakakuha ako ng electric motor. Tinray ko na ikabit doon. Yung controller galing ng online shop tapos yung motor galing lang din ng junk shop,” he said.

After three months, the improvised electric car worked.

“Gumana naman! May charger naman ako na universal. Four hours bago siya mag full charge tapos mga 50 kilometers (ang takbo ng kotse) yung isang full charge,” Albert said.

Kuya Kim said that although the concept of EVs or electric vehicles, sounds modern, the technology was developed years ago.

The very first EV was developed by Scottish inventor Robert Anderson in the 1830s.

In 1884, the English inventor Thomas Parker made the first electric car for mass production. But the gasoline-powered cars were more popular among motorists at that time.

Today, even though EVs are expensive compared to gasoline vehicles, its operating and maintenance costs are lower.

“Electric cars have a higher initial cost. However, they can actually save you money in the long term. They don’t have that engine that you need to change oil, check every now and then,” Mechanical Engineer Claive Bitoon said.

EVs are also more environmentally friendly.

“They emit no tail pipe emissions. This contributes to improve air quality,” he said.

But in the country, the engineer said that “we still need to work on building a comprehensive charging infrastructure especially in major cities. As that network expands, the electric cars are likely to become more popular.”  — Carby Basina/BAP, GMA Integrated News
