Tornado rips off roofs in Cagayan school


Heavy rains and strong winds from typhoon Goring and a tornado ripped off roofs of a school building in Buguey, Cagayan.

According to a "24 Oras" report by Russel Simorio around 80 percent of the classrooms in Liserio Antiporda Sr. National High School had damaged roofs and doors after a tornado tore through the structure.

"May dumaan na ipo-ipo kaya nasagi yung karamihan sa classroom namin dito, malakas,"Gina Sebastian, a teacher, said.

Rainwater has also accumulated in some spots in the classroom increasing the risk of mosquito-related diseases.

Considering the damage, the school principal said that students might just be given modules to work on.

"May papasok, sila yung mag-face-to-face classes. Iyong hindi papasok, magmo-module pa rin," Nimfa Alagao, school principal, said.

In Barangay Camalaniugan, hectares of rice fields turned into a lake.  A portion of a bridge was destroyed in Barangay Sto. Nino making it unpassable.

In Benguet, rock boulders were scattered along the boundary of Baguio and Tuba town.  The local government said backhoes and other equipment are on standby to clear the area.

Motorists are advised to avoid the Kennon Road route due to the rockslides.

Clearing operations were also conducted in Claveria-Calanasan Road in Apayao due to landslide and in Abra-Kalinga Road that was covered by thick mud.  Tow vehicles were rescued after getting stuck in the mud.

In Piddig, Ilocos Norte, townsfolk kept the bayanihan spirit alive when they carried the remains of a 90-year-old resident on an assembled bamboo platform and crossed the raging river to get to the funeral parlor.—Jiselle Anne Casucian/LDF, GMA Integrated News
