11 Dawlah Islamiyah members killed in Maguindanao del Sur clash

Eleven members of the Dawlah Islamiyah (DI) were killed in a military offensive in Datu Hoffer Ampatuan, Maguindanao del Sur.

According to the Philippine Army’s 6th Infantry Division, the firefight between the DI and government troops lasted for 20 minutes on Friday.

The offensive against the extremist group was initiated based on ground information, which later allowed the army to conduct an airstrike, artillery, fire and deploy ground troops to the exact location of the DI.

Seized after the clash are 10 high-powered firearms and 3 explosive devices.

“The consolidation of the aforementioned terrorist group signifies an ominous plan to disrupt economic activities and undermine peaceful living not only in the residents of Datu Hoffer Ampatuan town but also across Central and South-Central Mindanao,” the statement read.

The slain DI members are currently still being identified with the help of Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) with the assistance of Imams and Barangay Captains, which will be followed by proper burial rights.  —Jiselle Anne Casucian/ VAL, GMA Integrated News
