Rain from shear line causes flooding in parts of Davao Region

Rains brought by a shear line or tail-end of a frontal system has caused major flooding in parts of the Davao region, displacing local residents.

According to a 24 Oras report by GMA Regional TV One Mindanao's Kent Abrigana on Tuesday, residents of Poblacion in Compostela, Davao de Oro had to use inflatable beds as floating devices, while cars remained stranded on roads and pigs drowned due to nearly roof-high floods.

The Mawab Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Office conducted rescue operations in Poblacion, Andili and Sawangan, while the Philippine Coast Guard conducted rescue operations in two barangays in Maco, Davao de Oro.

Around 143 individuals or 38 families in Barangay Poblacion were evacuated to the barangay gymnasium, while a landslide was recorded in Barangay Sawangan, affecting a total of 200 homes and Road KM67 in Barangay Tuburan, which has since reopened.

Meanwhile, rescue operations had to utilize motorbancas to save residents from the flood in Montevista.

Residents took the chance to catch frogs and birds amid the strong winds.

Floods also devastated residents of Panabo, Davao del Norte and Barangay San Vicente.

Portions of the main road in Purok Lemon, Barangay Pandapan, Tagum City and San Pedro Bridge in Caraga, Davao Oriental reportedly collapsed due to the weather.

Roads were also blocked due to intense flooding in Davao City, while over 69 families were displaced in Tala. — Jiselle Anne C. Casucian/BM, GMA Integrated News
