Over 6K farmers affected by flooding, landslides in Davao region
At least 6,300 farmers were affected by the recent flooding and landslides in Davao region, according to the Department of Agriculture-Davao (DA-11).
DA-11 said the damage to agriculture, including livestock and poultry, reached more than P145 million.
Based on its data, around 8,000 hectares of rice fields, corn plantations, and high-value crops were damaged. The damage to rice fields alone reached more than P108 million.
The provinces of Davao de Oro, Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental, and Davao City were affected.
"This data will fluctuate either will reduce or magbaba depende sa additional validation. As of today, naa pa gihapon mga areas nga submerged. sa mga vegetaive area especially sa rice, maka-thrive pa man gud na siya kung muhubas ang tubig,” DA-11 Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Focal Joedel Leliza said.
The recent rains brought by the shear line is somehow beneficial to Davao Occidental and Davao del Sur as they are experiencing hot weather condition, the DA-11 added.
"Since they are experiencing the effects of El Niño, Katong ulan nga miabot sa ilaha, murag beneficial sa ilang commodities,” Leliza said.
The DA-11 is still waiting for the data to be completed, including the rehabilitation plan of areas affected by the calamities, so they can start the distribution of assistance to the farmers affected.
“We will then provide intervention doon manggagaling sa regular program po namin like for stocking ang interventions nga pwede namo mahatag sa farmers. The rest nga dili namo mahatag will be requested didto sa national office through our quick response fond,” Leliza said. —GMA Regional TV
