BACOLOD CITY, Philippines - The United Negros Alliance, a local political party in Negros Occidental founded by former Ambassador Eduardo âDanding" Cojuangco and chaired by then governor Joseph Marañon, has reportedly chosen its bet for the gubernatorial derby in Negros in 2010. A source within the party said it is incumbent Congressman Jeffrey Ferrer of the fourth district of Negros Occidental and not Representative Jose Carlos "Kako" Lacson of the third district. Lacson was earlier rumored to be the choice of Marañon to replace him at the Capitol. Incumbent Gov. Isidro Zayco is reportedly planning to go back to his hometown in Kabankalan City to run again for mayor. But Lacson, a third-termer legislator, is also allegedly contemplating on running for mayor of Talisay City than battle it out for the gubernatorial post. He cannot be reached for comment as of Wednesday. Ferrer, reached through his cellular phone the other night, said: "Oh, it's a shocking development!" "Although it's an opportunity, I know that I still need to perform first in my district so the people won't have any regrets in choosing me as their representative," added the neophyte congressman. He also said it's too early right now to talk about the gubernatorial derby in the province. Other hopefuls for the position reportedly include former congressman Charlie Cojuangco of the fourth district and Sagay City Mayor Alfredo Marañon Jr. - Sun.Star Bacolod
