Kanlaon Volcano had 17 volcanic quakes, PHIVOLCS says

PHIVOLCS says Kanlaon Volcano had 17 volcanic quakes.

A total of 17 volcanic earthquakes, including three volcanic tremors that lasted from 6 to 96 minutes long, were recorded in the vicinity of Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island in the last 24 hours, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

Based on its latest advisory, Phivolcs also said the sulfur dioxide (SO2) flux from the summit of the volcano reached 5,222 tonnes of sulfur dioxide (SO2) per day on January 16, higher than the 3,341 tonnes a day SO2 recorded on January 13.

The volcano likewise continued its degassing with occasional ash emissions drifting southwest and generating plumes measuring 200 meters. Its edifice was also intensified.

Kanlaon Volcano had an explosive eruption on December 9, 2024, prompting PHIVOLCS to raise the Alert Level from 2 to 3 (intensified unrest/magmatic unrest). It also erupted on June 3, emitting 5,000-meter tall plumes.

Phivolcs recommended residents living within the six-kilometer radius from the volcano’s summit to evacuate. Pilots were also prohibited from flying close to the volcano, as ash from any sudden eruption can be hazardous to aircraft.

The Negros Oriental province was earlier placed under a state of calamity due to the eruption.
