Kanlaon emitted ash thrice on Saturday morning –PHIVOLCS
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported three ash emission events at Kanlaon Volcano on Saturday morning.
According to PHIVOLCS, the ash emissions were recorded during the following timeframes:
- 7:20 a.m. to 7:45 a.m.
- 8:05 a.m. to 8:14 a.m.
- 10:48 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.
“These events produced grayish ash plumes rising 200 to 850 meters above the summit crater, drifting west and southwest,” PHIVOLCS stated. The plumes were observed via an IP camera stationed at VKMN and at the KVO-CC Observatory in Canlaon City.
Light ashfall was also reported in Barangay Yubo, La Carlota City, Negros Occidental.
Kanlaon Volcano remains under Alert Level 3 (Increased Unrest/Magmatic Unrest).
PHIVOLCS emphasized that a six-kilometer radius around the summit should remain a no-entry zone. Additionally, it warned against flying aircraft near the volcano.
At Alert Level 3, Kanlaon Volcano poses risks including:
- Sudden explosive eruptions
- Lava flows or effusion
- Ashfall
- Pyroclastic density currents (PDCs)
- Rockfalls
- Lahars, especially during heavy rains
Kanlaon Volcano’s last eruption on December 9 prompted the escalation of the alert level from 2 to 3. In response, Negros Oriental declared a state of calamity. — DVM, GMA Integrated News
