Kanlaon emits 900-meter ash plume, 35 quakes logged in past 24 hours


Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island emitted a 900-meter high ash plume from its crater while recording 35 volcano earthquakes in the past 24 hours, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology Sunday morning.

In its latest bulletin, PHIVOLCS said Alert Level 3 is still up over Mt. Kanlaon.

A total of 14 ash emission events were also observed that ranged from two to 65 minutes long.

On Saturday, Kanlaon also released 2,413 tonnes of sulfur dioxide  into the atmosphere.

PHIVOLCS advised the public that all persons within the six-kilometer radius from the volcano’s summit should be evacuated.

All aircraft are prohibited from flying close to the 8,087 feet high volcano.

The agency reminded everyone that possible hazards include a sudden explosive eruption, lava flor or effusion, ashfall, pyroclastic density current, rockfall and lahars caused by heavy rains. —RF, GMA Integrated News
