Kanlaon Volcano logs volcanic quakes, continues degassing
Kanlaon Volcano on Negros island continued to show signs of unrest, logging volcanic earthquakes and degassing Friday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.
The volcano, which straddles Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental, had 10 volcanic earthquakes recorded from 12 a.m. Friday to 12 a.m. Saturday.
Kanlaon Volcano also emitted 1,714 tonnes of sulfur dioxide Friday.
Moderate plumes reaching up to 100 meters tall were seen rising from the summit. The plumes drifted southwest.
PHIVOLCS said the volcano showed signs of continuous degassing, including occasional ash emission.
Kanlaon Volcano's edifice remains inflated.
Alert Level 3 (Intensified Unrest/Magmatic Unrest) is still in effect at Kanlaon Volcano on Saturday.
PHIVOLCS said the six-kilometer radius from the volcano's summit should remain evacuated.
Flying aircraft close to the volcano should not be allowed, it added.
Kanlaon Volcano poses the following hazards, PHIVOLCS said:
- sudden explosive eruption;
- lava flow or effusion;
- ashfall;
- pyroclastic density current;
- rockfall; and
- lahars during heavy rains.
