DOT suspends tourism activities near Kanlaon Volcano due to ashfall
The Department of Tourism (DOT) on Wednesday suspended tourism activities in several areas in Negros Occidental following the ashfall caused by the recent eruption of Kanlaon Volcano.
“All tourism activities near Mt. Kanlaon, including treks and visits to nearby destinations such as La Carlota City, Bago City, La Castellana, and other surrounding areas in Negros Occidental, have been temporarily suspended,” the DOT said in an advisory.
The agency added that La Carlota City, Iloilo, Antique, and several municipalities in Negros Occidental and parts of Guimaras Island are experiencing ashfall.
Tourists were advised to postpone their travel plans near Kanlaon Volcano and follow the safety measures provided by local authorities.
“We urge the public to remain vigilant, follow official advisories from PHIVOLCS and local authorities, and avoid disseminating unverified information,” DOT said.
Kanlaon Volcano had an explosive eruption on Tuesday, which produced a voluminous bent plume approximately 4,000 meters tall.
DOT said there have been no reported stranded or injured tourists or damage to tourism-related establishments.
“All tourist accommodations and infrastructure have been assessed as structurally sound, and local tourism offices continue to monitor the situation closely,” DOT said.
