LTO orders drivers racing on Isabela highway to explain

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has issued a show cause order against the AUV and SUV drivers apparently engaged in racing along a national highway in Cauayan, Isabela.

In Mariz Umali’s “24 Oras” report on Tuesday, a rearview video caught the AUV speeding and seemingly racing with the SUV.

The AUV was also caught belching black smoke.

The SUV and AUV drivers will be asked to explain why they should not face a complaint for reckless driving and why their driver’s license should not be suspended or revoked.

“They were driving at a speed that is not normal. They were weaving in and out of traffic. So that can be tantamount to reckless driving,” LTO chief Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II said.

According to its initial investigation, LTO found that the AUV driver received another show cause order for reckless driving early this year.

LTO will conduct a hearing on May 13.

The owners of the vehicles cannot sell or transfer the ownership to other individuals while the investigation is ongoing.

The drivers may be penalized with revocation of license or suspension, to disqualification to apply for a dual license, ranging from two to four years.

The AUV may also be fined from P5,000 to P15,000 for smoke-belching. —Mariel Celine Serquiña/LDF, GMA Integrated News
