AFP beefs up security in Sulu, Basilan ahead of Eleksyon 2025

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), through the 11th Infantry “Alakdan” Division and Joint Task Force Orion, said it has escalated its security operations across Sulu and Basilan ahead of Eleksyon 2025.

In a statement, the AFP said it is prepared to act decisively against threats from land, sea, or air to ensure an honest, peaceful, and orderly elections.

The AFP added that it has worked closely with the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Sulu and Basilan and has conducted a series of coordinating conferences and joint planning sessions with law enforcement agencies.

The measures are directed to finalize deployment strategies and intensify operational readiness, especially in places previously flagged as election hotspots.

“Our forces are in full security posture. Our land, maritime, and aerial capabilities are fully deployed and mission-ready to counter any disruption before, during, and after election day. The Alakdan Division and JTF Orion stand firm in protecting the sanctity of every vote and the safety of every voter,” Major General Leonardo Peña, 11ID and Joint Task Force Orion Commander, said.

Included in its intensified maritime security effort is the deployment of the BRP General Mariano Alvarez (PS176), a fast attack interdiction craft, to hold maritime patrols within the 11th Infantry Division's operational area.

The BRP General Mariano Alvarez is one of the attached warships under Joint Task Force Orion, which boosts naval visibility and deterrence in Sulu’s waters.

Further, the AFP reported that ground forces from the 1101st, 1102nd, 1103rd, and 101st Infantry Brigades, together with their attached battalions, have been strategically deployed across key municipalities in both provinces.

Maritime patrols were also intensified in coordination with the Philippine Coast Guard, while aerial security patrols coordinated with the Philippine Air Force were on standby to give rapid response capabilities.

In their joint send-off ceremonies, JTF Orion, Philippine National Police, and Philippine Coast Guard personnel were ceremonially dispatched to their designated posts.

"With comprehensive security measures in place, government forces remain vigilant and resolute—ready to uphold peace, defend democracy, and safeguard the will of every peace-loving resident of Sulu and Basilan," the AFP said. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
