Magalong tops Baguio City mayoral election; Domogan returns to House

BAGUIO CITY — Benjamin Magalong has secured his third and final term as mayor, while Mauricio Domogan, who served as Baguio's Congressman over a decade ago, has scored his spot as the city’s representative in the Lower House, as declared by the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

Magalong recorded the most votes out of the six candidates vying for the mayoral position, including incumbent Congressman Mark Go who came in second place.

“Thank you very much for your trust and confidence in the administration, and rest assured that we will be very consistent. Kung ano ‘yung pinakita namin diyan sa (What we showed in our) first term, second term, you will see the same in the third term,” he told reporters.

“Well established naman ‘yung foundation namin, so I have no doubt we’ll be able to end my third term with a bang,” he added.

Magalong’s running mate Faustino Olowan bagged the vice mayorship against his only opponent Mylen Yaranon, who has since filed an electoral protest.

"We are very happy of the result, despite that fact that I have been most of the time at City Hall, working. The people of Baguio have spoken," Olowan said.

"That is their practice ever since, they never accept whatever defeat that is -- unanimous, majority compared to our vote, but we don't know why she is doing that. That is their character. They never admit defeat," he added.

Meanwhile, Domogan secured his return as the city’s congressman, a spot he previously held from 2001 to 2010, besting six other candidates.

Speaking in a mix of Ilocano, Filipino, and English, Domogan thanked his supporters while calling on his opponents to forgive and forget the tensions that came with the campaign season.

"To our opponents: While the election had been finished, let us forget and forgive each other for whatever mudslinging that our mouths had uttered during the height of the election campaign," he said.

"You will note that in our case, we did never mudsling or put down any of you, our worthy opponents, so let us forget whatever that had been mistakenly said," he added.

Domogan said among his priorities will be pushing for the amendment of the Baguio City Charter, a measure which had been previously vetoed by President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. — BAP, GMA Integrated News
