Candidates from rival parties take top posts in Angeles City

Voters in Angeles City, Pampanga, have elected candidates from opposing parties to its two highest local posts, with outgoing First District Representative Carmelo “Jon” Lazatin II of Lakas-CMD winning the mayoral race and Amos Rivera of the People's Reform Party (PRP) clinching the vice mayor's seat.

Lazatin secured 98,164 votes, while his rival, Oscar Albayalde (PRP), received 58,953 votes.

Rivera (79,866 votes) edged out incumbent Vice Mayor Vicky Vega-Cabigting (72,315) of Lakas-CMD.

Lazatin’s brother, Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin Jr., the incumbent mayor, will soon serve as a member of the House of Representatives. Carmelo Lazatin ran unopposed in Monday's midterm elections.

In a brief message, Lazatin expressed deep gratitude for his victory.

“Una sa lahat, nagpapasalamat ako sa Diyos… sa aking pamilya… at sa lahat ng mga sumuporta, nagtiwala, at nagdasal para sa amin. Hindi ito pagkapanalo ni Jon Lazatin lamang—ito ay simbolo ng bago nating pagsasamahan... para sa mas maganda, mas maunlad, at mas mapayapang Ciudad ng Angeles,” he said.

(First of all, I thank God… my family… and all those who supported, trusted, and prayed for us. This victory is not just for Jon Lazatin—it symbolizes our new unity... for a better, more prosperous, and more peaceful City of Angeles.)

Lazatin also thanked his opponents and their supporters, saying the electoral process has fostered deeper understanding and commitment to the city’s future. — VBL, GMA Integrated News
