Over 5,000 still in evacuation centers after Kanlaon eruption

More than 5,000 individuals remain in evacuation centers in some Negros Occidental towns following the eruption of Mt. Kanlaon on Tuesday morning.

According to a 24 Oras report by Aileen Pedreso on Wednesday, residents of ashfall-affected areas in Bago City, La Carlota City, and La Castellana City were still in evacuation areas, with at least 21 barangays still affected by the previous volcanic explosions in December 2024 and April 2025.

“Hindi nadagdagan ang mga nag-evacuate. Wala namang natitira sa six-kilometer [permanent] danger zone,” said OCD-NIR Regional Director Donato Sermeno III.

(There are no more updated tallies to the evacuees. There were no more residents within the six-kilometer [permanent] danger zone.)

The eruption occurred at around 2 a.m. on Tuesday, with ashfall reaching up to Bacolod City.

The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) clarified that while no explosions followed after the initial eruption on Tuesday, it was still possible.
