Coral rehab efforts continue in Kalayaan Island Group —PCG
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on Wednesday reported another round of successful coral reef rehabilitation efforts in the Kalayaan Island Group (KIG) in Palawan.
In a statement, the PCG said that the mission, conducted by its Marine Science Group (PCG MSG), was done following the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to protect and restore the fragile marine ecosystems in the West Philippine Sea.
The coral reef rehabilitation efforts used methods such as selecting coral fragments, handling and replanting procedures, and assisting biodiversity assessments and underwater surveys.
“The coral rehabilitation effort served as part of a broader initiative to safeguard the marine environment in the KIG and reaffirms PCG’s commitment to the ongoing monitoring and building of future rehabilitation missions,” the PCG said.
The PCG was assisted by the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development and marine scientists from Western Philippines University—Puerto Princesa Campus. —Jiselle Anne Casucian/VBL, GMA Integrated News
