Tawilis sales affected by story missing sabungeros thrown into Taal Lake

Sales of fish caught in the Taal Lake have been affected by a whistleblower’s claims that the missing sabungeros – cockfight watchers who were abducted in 2021 – were killed and their bodies thrown into its waters.

According to Ian Cruz’s report on “24 Oras,” tawilis from the lake were still available in the afternoon at the market in Talisay.

Before one of the accused in the missing sabungeros case said he was ready to tell all about the abductions and the alleged killings, fish from the lake were already sold out by noon.

“One week na ho,” Gemma Malibiran said, when asked how long her sales have been affected.

To allay consumers’ fears that the fish in the lake may have eaten human remains, she said the fish sold in the market were raised by fishers.

“Mga alaga po kasi lahat ito. Kaya safe na safe,” she added.

Catherine Mendoza had a similar story.

“Inaalok lang po namin pero ayaw nilang bumili dahil apektado nga nung magsasabong na itinapon,”

It was already almost 4 p.m. when a market-goer bought tawilis from her.

“Ayos naman ang isda,” the customer said. –NB, GMA Integrated News
