DOH, DepEd launch health assessments for over 2,600 Grade 1 kids in Davao region
More than 2,600 Grade 1 pupils across the Davao region are set to benefit from free school-based health assessments rolled out by the Department of Health in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd).
The joint initiative, launched under the campaign “Assessment for Better Development: Tutukan ang Early Detection para Bawat Bata Malusog!”, kicked off on June 29 at San Roque Central Elementary School in Obrero, Davao City.
The campaign aims to identify early signs of developmental delays or health issues among schoolchildren—such as hearing and vision problems, dental issues, and nutritional deficiencies—to enable timely intervention that supports both health and academic performance.
“Early detection and health assessments help us to identify and address potential health concerns before they affect a child’s development and learning,” Health Undersecretary Dr. Abdullah B. Dumama, Jr. said.
The medical services provided during the assessment include:
- General physical exams
- Vision and hearing screenings
- Dental checkups
- Ear care
- Deworming
DOH officials were joined by local health leaders, including OIC Regional Director Dr. Ellenietta HMV N. Gamolo, OIC Assistant Regional Director Dr. Grace Amistoso, and Local Health Support Division Chief Dr. Raquel Montejo.
The school-based health assessments will be conducted in eight selected elementary schools throughout July, targeting over 2,600 children across the region.
DepEd Regional Director Dr. Allan G. Farnazo and Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) Chief Dr. Ricardo B. Audan expressed strong support for the program, which is backed by partner institutions including Davao Regional Medical Center, Davao Occidental General Hospital, and several local government units. –Sherylin Untalan/NB, GMA Integrated News
