Rare light pillars appear over Bantayan Island, Cebu

A rare light phenomenon lit up the sky over Barangay Patao, Bantayan Island on Sunday night, July 13, stunning residents and viewers online.

Photos shared by YouScooper Edison Gee Albaciete Rosell showed bright vertical beams of light stretching into the night sky — a phenomenon known as light pillars.

According to PAGASA, light pillars form when moonlight reflects off ice crystals in the atmosphere, usually when thin cirrus clouds are present.

Though more common in colder countries, light pillars can occasionally appear in the Philippines under the right weather conditions. —Sherylin Untalan/KG, GMA Integrated News
