NGCP hoists yellow alert over Visayas, Mindanao grids
The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) placed the Visayas and Mindanao power grids under “yellow alert” status on Friday afternoon.
In an advisory, the NGCP said the Visayas grid will be placed under yellow alert from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on August 1, 2025.
The NGCP issued the yellow alert as the Visayas grid’s peak demand reached 2,449 MW while its available capacity stood at 2,569 MW.
A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.
The NGCP said the raising of the yellow alert over the Visayas grid was due to the significant number of plants on unplanned/forced outages and de-rated capacities and the high system demand.
In particular, the company said that “10 plants have been on forced outage from April to July, and six other power plants out since 2024; while four are running on derated capacities, for a total of 423 megawatts (MW) unavailable to the grid.”
The Mindanao power grid, likewise, will be placed under yellow alert from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday as its system demand reached 2,667 MW while its available capacity stood at 2,827 MW.
The NGCP also cited “a significant number of plants on unplanned/forced outages and de-rated capacities” and “high system demand” for raising the yellow alert status over the Mindanao grid.
The grid operator said that “11 plants have been on forced outage from June to July, and two other power plants out since 2024; while three are running on derated capacities, for a total of 638.3MW unavailable to the grid.”
“The Luzon grid is under normal condition,” the NGCP said.
At past 8 p.m., the NGCP lifted the yellow alert status for both Visayas and Mindanao grids.
