Military asks Manero brothers to stay calm

DAVAO CITY, Philippines - The Philippine Army appealed for sobriety over reports that the Manero brothers have declared war against the New People's Army (NPA) rebels for abducting their brother, retired Master Sergeant Jose Manero on Sunday. The group of convicted priest killer Norberto Manero, alias Kumander Bukay, allegedly threatened to abduct the rebels' allies and relatives if their brother is not released soon. In a telephone interview Thursday, Army's 10th ID public affairs officer Major Rey Aguada said they are not aware of the Maneros' plan, adding that this is a police matter and not the military's concern. Aguada said though they are willing to talk with the Maneros and dissuade them from pursuing their plan of retaliation. Aguada said some military officials in Davao Region had previously worked with the Maneros in North Cotabato back in the 80's. Manero's supporters led by Kumander Ligaya are reportedly now in Calinan pursuing the rebels led by Leoncio Pitao alias Kumander Parago. Several anti-communist groups have reportedly expressed their willingness to run after the rebels, as well upon the Manero's request. Jose Manero was abducted along with the farm owner and a certain Froilan Labrado in Calinan, Davao City, who were released that same day. Aguada said the Army's 73rd Infantry Battalion has launched hot pursuit operations against Parago's men who are believed to be in the mountains of Calinan. Aguada said they are also closely monitoring civilians who are known supporters of Kumander Parago, in case they help the rebel leader escape from the military dragnet in the mountains. – Sun.Star Davao
