Cargo ship runs aground in Camarines Sur – PCG

A cargo ship grounded in shallow water off the coast of Camarines Sur, the Philippine Coast Guard said over the weekend.

In a statement from Coast Guard District Bicol, the 13 Filipino seafarers that served as the crew of the LCT Golden Phoenix were declared "safe and in good health" after the August 7 incident.

According to the Coast Guard, the combination of strong winds and the current contributed to the accident in the waters off Barangay Matandang Siruma in San Miguel Bay

The vessel was carrying construction materials at the time of the mishap.

The PCG immediately responded after learning of the accident and has coordinated with the local barangay.

"Initial attempts to conduct a full inspection were deferred due to unfavorable sea conditions. The ship’s captain and shipping company representatives have since taken immediate action, including arranging for a hull inspection by divers and preparing necessary documentation for maritime procedures," the PCG said.

No oil spill has been reported although the PCG is continuing to observe the area. — RF, GMA Integrated News
