PHIVOLCS: Increased seismic energy recorded in Taal Volcano

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) on Sunday said it has recorded an increase in real-time seismic energy measurement (RSAM) from Taal Volcano since Saturday.

In an advisory, PHIVOLCS said 19 volcanic tremors have been recorded by the Taal Volcano Network since Saturday, August 9.

The agency added that the increased seismic energy is simultaneous with the moderate to voluminous plume from the Taal Main Crater.

Recorded on Friday, Aug. 8, Taal Volcano has emitted an average of 374 tonnes of sulfur dioxide a day.

“These sharp increases in RSAM and vigorous steaming from the Main Crater may lead to a phreatic or even a minor phreatomagmatic eruption,” PHIVOLCS said.

Taal Volcano is at Alert Level 1, meaning it is in an abnormal condition and should not be interpreted to have ceased unrest nor ceased the threat of eruptive activity.

Under Alert Level 1, Taal Volcano is expected to have sudden steam-driven or phreatic or minor phreatomagmatic eruptions, minor ashfall, and lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gas.

“DOST-PHIVOLCS strongly recommends that entry into Taal Volcano Island, a permanent danger zone, especially the vicinities of the Main Crater and the Daang Kastila fissure, must remain strictly prohibited,” PHIVOLCS said.

Local government units were urged to continuously prepare for possible sulfur dioxide volcanic increases and mitigation plans to address possible health impacts.

PHIVOLCS also advised civil aviation authorities to avoid flying above the Taal Volcano Island, as ash may suddenly erupt. — Mariel Celine Serquiña/RF, GMA Integrated News
