2 hurt, suspect nabbed in Baliwag market hostage taking
A suspect was arrested after stabbing two individuals and taking a teen boy hostage at the Baliwag Public Market in Bulacan, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said.
In a statement issued Wednesday evening, the PNP said the police around 1:35 a.m. received a report about the incident.
“Officers attempted to negotiate with the suspect, who refused to surrender,” the PNP said.
“Seizing the right moment, a responding officer successfully disarmed and subdued the suspect, ending the standoff without further harm to the hostage,” it added.
The two injured victims were brought to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
According to the PNP, the suspect is now under police custody.
He is facing charges for two counts of attempted homicide and serious illegal detention under the Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation, and Discrimination Act.
“I commend the courage, professionalism, and quick response of our personnel in Baliwag. Their decisive actions not only protected the hostage but also prevented further harm to innocent citizens,” PNP chief Police General Nicolas Torre III said.
“This incident highlights the dedication of our officers who stand ready to serve and safeguard every community in the country,” he added. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
