Visayas State University students back in dorms after being evacuated due to floods
Students of Visayas State University (VSU) returned to their dormitories on Wednesday after around 500 of them were evacuated last night due to floods.
According to VSU's post on Facebook, "Viscans return to their respective dormitories as of 8 AM today, August 27, after being evacuated for safety due to inclement weather conditions last night."
The displaced students were also provided with breakfast earlier at the ADE Building added the VSU.
The university also announced that face-to-face classes and regular work on campus will resume starting at 1 pm "in line with Memorandum Circular No. 221 from the Office of the President and to give time for affected students to recover from flooding."
According to the VSU's website, its Crisis Management Committee transferred dormitory occupants and students from low-lying areas to university classrooms late Tuesday for their safety.
VSU said that the students were housed at the Faculty of Management and Economics (FME) building amid the downpour from the southwest monsoon, which resulted in flooding parts of the university and nearby communities.
The university said that residents confirmed rising water levels in Patag, Guadalupe, Pangasugan, and other flood-prone areas.
No major injuries have been reported, according to the report.
VSU, meanwhile, reminded the community to keep emergency hotlines handy, including the VSU Emergency Hotline (09100582432). —VAL, GMA Integrated News
