LTO suspends truck driver's license in fatal Laguna crash

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) suspended the driver’s license of the driver of a truck that rammed a fruit stand, resulting in the death of a 60-year old woman and injured two others in Laguna.

In a press release, the LTO said the show cause order directed the truck driver to explain why he should not be penalized for charges of reckless driving and being deemed unfit to operate a motor vehicle.

His license was surrendered and suspended for 90 days, while the vehicle was placed under alarm.

According to a “24 Oras” report, police said the truck lost its brakes while traveling in the town of Mabitac on Aug 29.

This caused the driver to jump out of the vehicle before it rammed into the fruit stand, where the victim was caught between the stand and a house.

LTO chief Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza said the agency also summoned the truck’s registered owner to explain why he should not be penalized for hiring a reckless driver.

The truck owner is also expected to show proof that the vehicle has been undergoing roadworthiness maintenance and inspections.

LTO reported that over 9,000 trucks have been apprehended nationwide from January to July for overloading.

Meanwhile, hundreds were penalized for other violations, such as worn-out tires. — Mariel Celine Serquiña/RF, GMA Integrated News
