7 dead after fishing vessel capsizes in Cagayan

Seven individuals have been found dead after their fishing vessel capsized in Santa Ana, Cagayan amid the effects of Super Typhoon Nando.

In a Balitanghali report by Nico Waje on Wednesday, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) had initially conducted search and rescue operations on Tuesday, which resulted in the 4 crew members being found.

However, they were forced to stop their search by 8 p.m. due to severe weather conditions.

Three were recovered dead once operations resumed at 6 a.m. on Wednesday.

Most of the bodies were found in mangroves, while others were found floating at sea.

PCG also shared that they also had to use a chainsaw to break the capsized vessel and retrieve trapped bodies.

The bodies of the victims are now being prepared to return to their home provinces.

Meanwhile, the PCG shared that the crew members had remained inside the vessel amid the super typhoon in order to protect it.

The PCG, Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (MDRRMO) and the local government are looking into mandating that no one must remain in vessels during severe weather conditions. —Jiselle Anne Casucian/ VAL, GMA Integrated News
