1 dead, 3 injured in Occidental Mindoro due to Opong

At least one person has been reported killed and three more injured in Occidental Mindoro due to the effects of Typhoon Opong.

According to Bea Pinlac's report on 24 Oras Weekend, the fatality was a 51-year-old man who had gone out to retrieve his children who were in a banca.

"Ililigtas niya po sana 'yung dalawa niyang anak na nasa bangka, pa-approach ng seashore. Kaya lang po, ayun, sa lakas ng alon...'Yun ang nag-cause ng drowning niya po," said LDRRMO I warning section chief Ma. Angelika Mercene.

In Sablayan, the Philippine Coast Guard rescued the five crewmembers of a boat that was hit by strong waves and wind on Friday. Also rescued were the crew of a fishing vessel that grounded ashore in Paluan. The PCG said there was no oil spill as a result of the incident.

More than 5,000 families or 18,000 individuals in Occidental Mindoro were recorded as being affected by the storm, and damage to agriculture reached at least P50 million.
