Parishes told not to use churches damaged in Cebu quake
The Archdiocese of Cebu has issued an advisory asking parishes in northern Cebu affected by the magnitude 6.9 earthquake not to use the churches to celebrate Mass until such time that they are declared safe to use.
The earthquake, with its epicenter traced off Bogo City in northern Cebu, struck late evening on September 30, 2025.
Among the structures affected badly is the Archdiocesan Shrine of Santa Rosa de Lima in Daanbantayan town.
In a Facebook post, the church said the heritage landmark collapsed partially, particularly its facade, following the quake. The church described the structure as a "very well preserved heritage landmark."
In its advisory, the Cebu Archdiocese said that the new Archbishop has ordered a structural assessment of all churches and rectories, and that churches should not be used to celebrate Mass until they are declared safe to use.
The advisory reads:
"In light of the recent earthquake, Cebu Archbishop, Most. Rev. Alberto S. Uy, has directed that a structural assessment be conducted on all our churches and rectories."
"To the parishes in the North that have been gravely affected, you are asked to refrain from using your churches for the celebration of the Holy Mass until the proper experts have carried out assessment and declared the structures safe for use."
"We continue to pray to our Loving Father for calmness and strength in the midst of these trials. We entrust ourselves, our families, and our communities into His merciful hands. May the Lord shelter us under His wings, protect us from every harm, and guide us to safety and peace." — GMA Regional TV
