Cebu placed under state of calamity after deadly quake

The province of Cebu has been placed under a state of calamity following the powerful magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck Bogo City and left at least 32 people dead and dozens of others injured.

The Sangguniang Panlalawigan declared the state of calamity in an emergency online session on Wednesday morning, citing the extensive damage caused by the quake, according to a Super Radyo dzBB Cebu report from Lloyd Suarez.

The declaration will allow the provincial government to release emergency funds more quickly and expedite relief and recovery operations for affected residents.

Earlier, the Office of Civil Defense also said 147 individuals sustained injuries during the quake. Of these, 119 were from Bogo City, 14 from San Francisco, five each from Tabuelan and Catmon, and four from Daanbantayan.

Local authorities and disaster response teams continue to assess the extent of the damage and provide assistance to displaced families.

Photos from Bogo City show collapsed structures, debris-strewn streets, and residents evacuating to safer areas following the tremor.

Search, rescue, and relief operations are ongoing, with provincial and national agencies coordinating to deliver aid and assess the immediate needs of affected communities.

PHIVOLCS said that a total of 379 aftershocks have already been recorded as of Wednesday morning. The strength of the aftershocks ranged from magnitude 1.4 to 4.8 and only three of them were felt.

“Inaasahan natin na magkakaroon pa ng mga aftershocks in the next few days. Sometimes the aftershocks would last for several weeks,” PHIVOLCS director Dr. Teresito Bacolcol told GMA Integrated News’ Unang Balita in an interview.
