More than 2,200 police officers have been mobilized to assist in relief and rehabilitation operations in areas affected by the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck Bogo City, Cebu on Tuesday night, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Thursday.

In a Super Radyo dzBB report by Mark Makalalad, PNP Regional Director Brig. Gen. Antonio Marallag Jr. said a total of 2,250 police personnel from various units have been deployed to support ongoing disaster response efforts in Cebu and neighboring provinces.

The PNP also sent augmentation forces from the Police Regional Office 8, the Police Negros Island Region, and other units to strengthen operations on the ground.

The police response is focused on relief distribution, rehabilitation work, safety and security monitoring, and the provision of immediate assistance to residents affected by the powerful tremor.

According to the regional police chief, four police stations sustained damage from the quake, while 37 police personnel were also affected.

The deployment comes as government agencies continue to assess the extent of the damage and deliver aid to thousands of residents impacted by the powerful tremor that struck northern Cebu on September 30.

The death toll from the devastating Cebu earthquake has risen to 72, according to the latest figures from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) released on Thursday morning.

The NDRRMC said all casualties are still for validation.

The magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck Bogo City, Cebu on Tuesday has affected 47,221 families, or 170,959, and displaced 20,000 persons, according to their data.

Aftershocks also continue to be felt in the province with the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reporting 2,461 of them as of 6 a.m. on Thursday. — Sherilyn Untalan/RSJ, GMA Integrated News
