Singapore PM Wong offers aid for PH relief, recovery efforts after deadly Cebu quake

Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on Thursday offered assistance to the Philippines following the 6.9-magnitude earthquake in northern Cebu that killed at least 72 and affected 170,000 people.

“Our thoughts are with the Philippines and its people during this difficult time. As a fellow ASEAN Member State and close friend of the Philippines, Singapore stands ready to provide assistance for ongoing relief and recovery efforts. Please do not hesitate to let us know how we can contribute,” Wong said in a letter to President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

Philippine disaster officials said the death toll from the Sept. 30 earthquake that struck Cebu’s Bogo City rose to at least 72 people on Thursday, with more than 360 injured so far.

Dozens of buildings and infrastructures, such as roads, bridges and seaports, were damaged or collapsed in Bogo City and neighboring towns.

“I am deeply saddened to learn about the loss of lives and the widespread damage caused by the earthquake that struck northern Cebu on 30 September 2025. On behalf of the Government of Singapore, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, and my sincere wishes for the speedy recovery of those who were injured,” Wong said.

Several other countries, including Japan, France, Australia, Saudi Arabia and China, and the European Union, earlier expressed condolences to the earthquake victims.

The United States, Malaysia and Taiwan also said they are ready to assist the Philippine government’s ongoing relief efforts in quake-devastated Cebu. — JMA, GMA Integrated News
