SC denies appeal of Pagsanjan, Laguna mayor ER Ejercito over graft conviction

The Supreme Court (SC) has denied the motion for reconsideration filed by Pagsanjan Mayor Jeorge “ER” Ejercito Estregan against its ruling that affirmed his graft conviction for awarding a contract to an unlicensed insurance company without bidding.

In a notice, the SC First Division said it resolved to deny the reconsideration with finality as there is no substantial argument to warrant a modification.

In February, the SC found Ejercito guilty of violating the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act. He and one other were sentenced to up to eight years in prison and permanently banned from holding public office.

Ejercito won a seat as mayor in the 2025 polls despite the guilty verdict.

He previously said that he could still file a motion for reconsideration with the First Division and another appeal with the SC En Banc.

The mayor has also maintained that he has done nothing wrong. — BM, GMA Integrated News
